After a 3-year campaign to ensure that UT apparel is made in factories that respect the rights of their workers, and after three years of having our student and faculty voices ignored by the UT administration, we have made the difficult decision to engage in an act of civil disobedience. As you read this 18 students are peacefully occupying the tower, demanding that President Powers live up to the core values of this university and support human rights by affiliating with the Worker Rights Consortium (WRC). Currently, our core purpose--“to transform lives for the benefit of society”-- rings hollow, as the UT administration has chosen convenience, complacency and corporate interests over the values that it claims to hold dear. We have done all of the following in pursuit of a third-party monitoring organization that will curb UT’s connection with sweatshops:
1. Passed a resolution through student government supporting affiliation with the Worker Rights Consortium (WRC)
2. Met with administrators from the Athletics department, the UT Co-op bookstore, the Licensing Director, and President Powers himself
3. Collected over 1,000 petition signatures and contacted hundreds of alumni and donors
4. Received the support of over 40 faculty members
5. Sent one of our representatives to conduct interviews with workers that currently produce UT apparel in sweatshops located in Honduras and El Salvador
Despite our efforts, President Powers has refused to affiliate with the WRC (a step taken by over 180 of our peer institutions) and has claimed that the Fair Labor Association (FLA) is properly inspecting apparel factories. However, the FLA has repeatedly attempted to cover up workers’ rights abuses, and, in a clear conflict of interest, corporate representatives sit on the FLA’s board of directors. Only after going through all official university channels to address and being ignored have we realized that the prudent step is to act with a force that cannot be ignored. In doing so we believe that this will help to transform The University of Texas at Austin into a better establishment, more capable of navigating the future that lies ahead.
